Sarah watched in amazement as Dusia lit the Sabbath candles. The perspiration and the anxious frown were gone, as was the haranguing. The work was done; there were no more orders to give. The loaves of bread made especially for Shabbat were set next to the wine on a table covered with Dusia’s finest linen.
Everything was in place, including Dusia. Black lace covered Dusia’s powdered face. The candlelight softened her large nose set between the peaks of her fat cheeks. The flickering lights kindly shadowed the two furrows above her nose and added a silver sheen to the gray at her temples. The dowager empress of the home was ready to welcome the Sabbath, which would, for a day, bring rest from Dusia’s domineering ways. The Sabbath transformed Dusia and her family loved it.
Dusia’s daughter Miriam sat next to Sarah, and Dusia’s son Aaron sat next to his Saba, his beloved old grandpa. Both children wiggled in anticipation of the evening meal. Dusia’s husband Gershom rose to his feet and turned to Aaron. “May God make you like Ephraim and Menashe.” Then as he turned to his daughter, Miriam, she gave him a big smile. Gershom noticed her front tooth had finally come out today. He grinned. “May God make you like Sarah, Rebecca, and Rachel.”
Dusia looked at her children, beaming with the blessing of their father. Then Gershom turned to Dusia. Looking at her endearingly, he blessed his wife. “An accomplished woman who can find? Far beyond pearls is her value. Her husband’s heart relies on her, and he shall lack no fortune. She repays him good, but never harm, all the days of her life….”
As Sarah watched Gershom, she thought, Oh, husband, how I long to hear you give me this Shabbat blessing, even as Gershom is blessing his wife. Dusia’s head was bowed slightly, yet Sarah could see her eyes glisten. Dusia lived to hear these words so tenderly spoken each Shabbat in the presence of her Abba and her children. Tonight, Gershom would hold her, love her… it was written in the Talmud. The Sabbath was her day, her night. The reward for her six days of grueling labor.
“Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who creates the fruit….” As Gershom said kiddush, Sarah found herself longing for her own home, with her husband at the end of the table where Gershom was saying kiddush. Her mind wandered to Benjamin and Leah. There would be two empty seats at our table, but maybe Saul would be there.
Sarah’s thoughts were arrested as the door burst open and banged loudly against the wall. Dusia jumped to her feet and screamed. Miriam ran into her arms as Aaron clutched his Saba.
Gershom whipped around as a man dressed in a black robe with a huge crucifix dangling from a thick gold chain yelled, “You have broken the edict of Justinian, the Emperor, you Jew!” The cleric spit out the word Jew with venom. “No murderer of
